REAL Nepal Project

A few weeks ago, Shristi from REAL Nepal had the idea of creating change within her local community using education. The plan was to teach uneducated women in the village every day for 1 hour. This would last a month and result in the women being able to read and write in Nepali. The literacy rate in Nepal in 2018 was 67.9%, however this can vary greatly when considering rural areas. Out of 30 households in REAL Nepal’s local village, 23 households are not able to write their names. Educating women is a very important aspect of improving the lives of entire communities as women are likely to pass this education on to future generations.

This plan to educate women not only helps with the overall education level in the area but it also allows the women to create friendships and overcome social issues. One of REAL Nepal’s hopes is that issues such as domestic violence and disability can be discussed by the women to improve understanding. By talking about these topics, the local community can reduce the stigma to create a better environment for local people.

The project has the following objectives:

  1. Within the 1st week, be able to recognize the Nepali Devnagarika script Or Nepali letters. This will be measured by a weekly test in reading, writing and speaking.

  2. Within the 2nd week, it is expected that the women will be able to write simple words which will be tested.

  3. To be able to create short and simple sentences which will be measured by daily practice.

  4. Teach 15 people to read and write their own name.

  5. Finally, to make the women aware of issues including their personal health, domestic violence and disabilities. REAL Nepal hopes that by encouraging each individual and allowing the whole class to communicate, they can achieve this.

REAL Nepal have already begun delivering their first few classes with the financial support of Global Support Link. This is one of the many benefits to being a small and agile charity that is able to support our partner organisations as we are able to provide support quickly and create positive changes within local communities. We are very grateful for Shristi and REAL Nepal for their dedication and hard work.
